A Brief History
For those of you that may not know, Gamescom is the single biggest trade and private video game event in the world today making it (as gamescom itself proclaims) for everyone! This is an important point in itself as it one of the few opportunities that gaming enthusiasts such as you and I get to rub shoulders with all of the world’s foremost games developers and really get to feel the excitement and anticipation of new games releases whilst drooling over all the new gaming accessories and machinery that we’re all waiting to get our grubby mitts on!
All the People… So many People
The show was first held in August 2009 and was designed to be the big European video game show to rival the ‘other show’ in Los Angeles. From this first show in 2009, Gamescom has gone from strength to strength and has become bigger and better every year, and for its third show in 2011, managed to attract around 275,000 visitors, which when you put it into perspective, is more than twice the attendance of this year’s Glastonbury festival.
It’s not only the amount of people that Gamescom attracts that makes it so important, it is the quality of the content on offer at the show itself. When trying to think about what is actually on offer there, it’s probably easier to tell you what they don’t do and to be fair, that would be a pretty short list! They cater for every type of gamer you can possibly think of from announcing all the latest games and machines to offering retro gaming areas and Cosplay areas where people can dress up as their favourite gaming characters and even take part in a spot of Karaoke!
The high score was set by Gamescom 2014, when over 335,000 visitors discovered new worlds - Gamescom 2015 is following firmly in its footsteps. We've already seen the likes of Microsoft and EA unleash some exclusive new trailers, fresh information on forthcoming franchise instalments, and shiny new limited edition items. Stay tuned for more throughout the rest of Gamescom 2015.
